Early Entrepreneurship
Built experience in commodity and import-export business.

Business pioneer whose rise from small-scale trading to the creation of Reliance transformed Indian corporate culture and expanded public participation in equity markets.
Dhirajlal Hirachand Ambani was born in Chorwad, Gujarat, in 1932. As a young man he worked in Aden before returning to India and entering the trading business.
He founded what became Reliance, first building in textiles and later expanding into petrochemicals and other industries. His approach combined scale, aggressive growth and a willingness to raise capital from a broad base of Indian investors.
By the time of his death in 2002, Reliance had become one of India’s largest business groups, and Ambani had reshaped ideas about entrepreneurship, capital markets and corporate ambition.
Dhirubhai Ambani was born in Gujarat on 28 December 1932.
He gained early commercial experience while working in Aden.
After returning to India, Ambani entered the import-export trade.
Reliance built a strong textile business and the Vimal brand.
Reliance attracted a large base of retail shareholders.
The group expanded heavily into petrochemicals and integrated manufacturing.
Ambani died in Mumbai on 6 July 2002.

Ambani did more than build factories. He changed the relationship between a large Indian company and small investors by actively cultivating public shareholders.
That capital-market strategy helped finance expansion and made Reliance a symbol of a new, more ambitious phase of Indian private enterprise.

His legacy is visible in Reliance’s scale, in the development of Indian capital markets and in the idea that Indian companies could pursue global industrial ambitions.
