Shubman Gill's cricket journey began at a young age, showcasing his talent in local leagues and school matches. He made a name for himself in the Under-19 circuit, particularly during the 2018 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup held in New Zealand. Gill was a standout performer, scoring 372 runs in the tournament, including an impressive century against Pakistan in the semifinals. This match, played at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch, was pivotal. It not only highlighted Gill’s skill but also his ability to perform under pressure, which would later define his career. His contributions helped India secure the championship title.
Shubman Gill made his international debut for India on January 31, 2019, in an ODI match against New Zealand. While he didn't make a significant impact in that game, his real opportunity came during the Test series against Australia later that year. On December 17, 2020, he played his first Test match at the Adelaide Oval. In a historic match, India faced a massive challenge following a loss in the first innings. In the second innings, with India needing 329 runs to win, Gill scored a brilliant 45 runs. His calm demeanor and technique impressed fans and critics. This match was significant not just for Gill but for the entire Indian team as they pulled off a remarkable victory, which set the tone for the series.
As Gill gained confidence, he continued to impress in formats beyond Tests. He was part of the Indian squad that toured England in 2021. During the five-match Test series, he scored a remarkable 84 runs in the second Test at Lord's, leading India to a memorable win. This match was especially significant as it was India’s first Test win at Lord’s in 19 years. Gill's ability to handle the pressure of playing in England's swinging conditions marked him as a player prepared for international challenges.
In the years following his rise, Gill took on a more prominent role in the Indian team. By mid-2023, he had been appointed as one of the key players to lead India in ODI formats, particularly with the World Cup approaching. His leadership on the field became evident as he often played the anchor role, allowing more aggressive batsmen to express themselves while maintaining stability in the batting lineup.
His career demanded resilience, adaptation and sustained performance under pressure.
